John J. York (Mac, GH) has been rocking a silver-fox beard. “I’m an actor, so whatever’s gonna work to get us more work — ‘Grow a beard! Okay, that’ll get you a job.’ That’s unusually how and actor things,” he begins. “But truly, the real reason I grew it is that my wife [Vicki} likes me with a beard. She said, ‘Grow your beard.’ I did it a while back when I wasn’t on the show too much, so I had a couple of months where I could kind of grow a beard and then shave it if I got called to GENERAL HOSPITAL. So I had it and she really liked it, but it was scratchy and itchy and the hair would go up my nose. So time goes by, fast-forward, and she said, ‘Grow your beard again. I really like you with a beard.’ And I said, ‘Okay.’ Maybe she thinks she’s with a different guy! Maybe that’s what she sees. I gotta ask her about that. But anyway, I asked Frank [Valentini, executive producer] first. I said, ‘Hey, what if I grew a beard?’ Beards, they’re kind of trending anyway now. They were trending so big in Hollywood, in the world — I mean, even Meryl Streep had a beard, I think, for a while, so I thought, ‘Why not Mac?’ And I asked Frank and he said, ‘Sure. Go ahead.’ And I grew it. Frank really liked it. I got a lot of compliments from the makeup and wardrobe people and other actors. Tamara Braun [Kim] just came up to me and goes, ‘I really like your beard.’ And I was just looking at myself in the Nurses’ Ball because when I go to the studio I really don’t have a TV. Not every room has a television. So it was the first time I got to see myself. Plus, on Twitter there were a couple of pictures of me with Felicia on that red carpet and I’m thinking, ‘That looks pretty good!’ As long as it’s not, like, a David Letterman beard, I’ll be okay.”
